Private investors trade the E-mini S&P 500 futures and the Micro E-mini S&P 500 futures. The difference between these two futures is the contract size. The micro future is ten times smaller than the E-mini future. These futures are listed exclusively on the CME exchange. The CME is the world's largest regulated futures exchange and has been active since 1898.

Tip: The code for each future consists of the symbol, a letter, and a number. The letter stands for the month, and the number stands for the year. For example, ESZ2 is the E-mini S&P 500 future with a maturity date in December 2022.
The E-mini is the most popular S&P 500 future. The trading volume in the E-mini—both the number of contracts and the nominal value—is greater than in the micro.
